Why?
According to the United Nations, 80 % of persons with disabilities in the world are living in developing countries, such as Uganda. There, children with disabilities are often neglected, abandoned or abused. With this project (The A-League), APAID aims to improve their quality of life.
What?
APAID helps the local partner organization The Kids League with the implementation of the A-league. This project includes:
- Yearly APAID courses for staff members and volunteers in the area of disability and adapted physical activities.
- Yearly three 7-weeks sport leagues (one training and one match per week) for children with disabilities aged 6-14.
- Awareness campaigns on disability issues during league seasons by using inclusive activities, information meetings and weekly newsletters.
Who?
The beneficiaries of the project will be:
a) 30 volunteers including people with disabilities per course
b) 120 children with disabilities (including some ex-child soldiers) per league season
c) 1000 community members who are involved in awareness campaigns per league season
Where?
This project has started in Kampala and will be expanded to the former conflict-regions in Northern Uganda (for ex-child soldiers).
When?
The A-leauge has started in February 2009 and will be yearly evaluated by APAID in collaboration with Stanford University (USA) and Paris X University (France).
