Why?
According to the United Nations, 80 % of persons with disabilities in the world are living in developing countries, such as Mozambique. There, children with disabilities are often neglected, abandoned or abused. With this project, APAID aims to improve their quality of life.
What?
APAID and Respo International help the local partner organization Prosport with the implementation of an adapted sports project. This project includes:
- APAID Level 1 courses for 100 staff members and volunteers in the area of disability and adapted physical activities.
- Education of 5 trainers of new coaches.
- Weekly adapted activities for 400 children with disabilities
- Awareness campaigns on disability issues during by organizing 2 sport events including 400 children with disabilities, parents, caretakers, community members and media.
Who?
The beneficiaries of the project are:
a) 100 volunteers including people with disabilities who are trained as coaches in adapted sports
b) 400 children with disabilities who participate in adapted sports activities
c) 2000 community members who are involved in awareness campaigns
Where?
This project focuses on Maputo in the first year and expands to the area around a KNVB regional center in the second year.
When?
The project has started in January 2010 and will be yearly evaluated by APAID.
