Why?
According to the United Nations, 80 % of persons with disabilities in the world are living in developing countries, such as Kenya. There, children with disabilities are often neglected, abandoned or abused. With this project (Kids With Disabilities, KWD), APAID aims to improve their quality of life.
What?
APAID helps the local partner organization MYSA with the implementation of KWD. This project exists out of:
- Yearly APAID courses for staff members and volunteers in the area of disability and adapted physical activities.
- Weekly recreation days (including 7 different adapted sports) for children with disabilities on a centralized venue.
- Outreach activities (including 1-3 different activities) in the slum areas.
- Awareness campaigns on disability issues during outreach activities using information meetings.

Who?
The beneficiaries of the project will be:
a) Yearly 30 volunteers including people with disabilities who are involved in the course and afterwards lead the activities
b) Monthly 200 children with disabilities who are involved in the sporting activities
c) Monthly 300 community members who are involved in awareness campaigns
early APAID courses for staff members and volunteers in the area of disability and adapted physical activities.
Where?
This project takes place in the slum areas of Nairobi, Kenya. In case of good results, the project will spread to other regions of Kenya.
When?
KWD started in May 2008 and yearly evaluation are conducted by APAID in collaboration with Paris X University (France).
